There was a nice article in the Press Democrat a few weeks back about students in Santa Rosa High School's ArtQuest program who took on the Getty Museum Challenge, creating their own versions of famous paintings, using their own creativity and common materials around the house. Kenwood resident Janet Fisher teaches Level 1 Visual Fine Arts, along with Brooke Delello in the upper levels.

Janet said, “The cool thing about this project, apart from it being so fun, is it involves research, looking at composition and lighting. It also makes the students part of this bigger project, that artists all over the world who are stuck at home are participating in.”

The end results are very entertaining and impressive, as you can see below.

We have a few birthday milestones.

Lauren Schwing, Director of Development for the Council on Aging, alerts us that Helen Louis Kivell, a 30 year resident of Oakmont, will be 102 on July 9. She writes, “This remarkable achievement is all the more marvelous when you consider that she was born during, and survived, the 1918 pandemic.” To celebrate, Helen's daughter Judy is organizing a car parade past Helen's house where she will be seated upon her Birthday Throne. This will take place from 11 a.m. to noon at 8070 Oakmont Dr., and everyone is invited to drive-by, decorate their car if they are feeling creative, wave a banner or sign and really help celebrate a life well lived! There will be live music in the driveway by local band Take 'Yer Medicine, and a City Proclamation will be presented.

Lauren said in an email, “Helen attends the Council on Aging's Senior Social Day Club where she has made many friends in addition to the friends at her Oakmont bridge groups. The Council on Aging staff considers Helen to be one of their greatest treasures. Helen is consistently friendly, good-natured, and has a constant smile which lights up any room she enters and brings joy to all who meet her. She is a true inspiration!”

Not far behind, long-time Kenwood resident Connie van Loben Sels will be 99 years old on July 14, and we wish her a very Happy Birthday! Connie's family farmed land across from the Kenwood Fire Station, where St. Patrick's Church now stands. In fact, her parents donated the land to the church. Connie has a beautiful soprano voice and sang in the choir until a just few years ago. She's always been one of my inspirations for how to “use it and not lose it” as you get older. If you visit, watch out - you might find her out in the yard killing a rattlesnake!

And Happy Birthday to my own mom, Jean Quenon, who turned 90 on June 27! We celebrated with Champagne and ice cream sundaes. Family who live in the Bay Area attended (six feet apart, sigh…), and those who live far away joined in via Zoom.

That's all I have room for. Please send in your own news and photo for Village Chat. It's easy to do. Just email, or call 833-5155 and chat me up! - AQP
