SIR Branch #92 to hear from survivor of war in Philippines
The speaker for the March 9 SIR Hood Mountain Branch #92 meeting will be Jean-Marie Haskett.
Jean-Marie was a little girl living in the Philippines with her family in Manila in December of 1941. The following month the Japanese army began the occupation of the Philippines and captured all non-national civilians. They were forced to live in prison camps as civilian prisoners of war for over three years.
Sickness, starvation, and brutality left them searching for strength and courage. After the war ended and the camp was liberated, she came home to America to finally come to grips with her devastating past and her hopeful present life.
SIR Branch #92 meets on the second Tuesday of each month at the Berger Center. The meeting starts at noon, and lunch is catered by Caf Europe. Any men interested in attending a meeting and/or joining should call membership chairman George Keller at 539-7618, or pick up an application at the Oakmont Village Association office.
