The 100 days of May

As most teachers will tell you, the month of May feels far longer than all other months of the school year. Everyone is pushing towards the transition into summer and packing in all the required elements before the deadline. For our community, May is also very busy and includes two of our town's most beloved events: the Mothers' Day Pancake Breakfast and Dunbar's fifth-grade play.

You may have heard the rumors that Dunbar will be retiring the melodrama after this year. It's true, but the intention is that an annual play WILL continue; the drama project is simply evolving. Nonetheless, this year's Wrongful Doings at Woeful Ranch will be a bittersweet milestone and the school hopes that many community members and alums will take the time to show up and show their support. It is very important to spread the word that there has been a shift in scheduling. Typically the play is performed during Memorial Day weekend, but this year the play will be mounted the weekend before, on the evenings of May 17 and 18 at 6 p.m., and Sunday, May 19 at 4 p.m. Tickets are available at the venue, $10 per adult, $5 per child, and $25 for a family “corral” (two adults/two kids). The performances are outdoors, at the rebuilt Haver Stage, with festival/picnic seating. Please plan to bring a low chair, blankets, or sleeping bags for your comfort. If you would like to contribute to the play, checks can be written and sent to “Dunbar School 5th Grade Play,” 11700 Dunbar Road, Glen Ellen, CA 95442.

On Sunday, May 12, the Glen Ellen Firefighter's Association will be hosting the Mothers' Day Pancake Breakfast. This is a wonderful community event and if you've never been you're really missing out on excellent food, coffee, juice (other drinks available for purchase), seeing your neighbors and friends, information and swag. The breakfast, from 8 a.m. to noon, is held in the big bay of the fire house. They can always use more volunteers. If you'd like to help out, please contact Helyna Derickson at

Two other community-related special events are happening this month. On Saturday, May 4, 9 a.m. to noon, at Altimira Middle School, there will be a community preparedness workshop organized by Supervisor Susan Gorin. On May 25 at the Glen Ellen Firehouse, Sonoma Valley Fire will host a Sonoma Citizens Organized to Prepare for Emergencies (SCOPE) training from 9 a.m. to noon, and then a hands-only CPR course 2-4 p.m. You can always find more information at

Season 2019 is up and running

As a co-owner of a small farm, I can personally report that local food production is well underway for this year. Several Glen Ellen farms have consistent or semi-consistent farmstands and others can be found selling to local restaurants or at the farmers markets. Flatbed Farm at 13450 Sonoma Hwy. is open every Saturday from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. The Red Barn at Oak Hill Farms, at 15101 Sonoma Hwy., is also open on Saturdays from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Bee Well Farm, 12201 Sonoma Hwy., is offering CSA memberships this year and can also be found at the Friday morning Depot Park farmers market in Sonoma. Our farm, Two Moon Family Farm, which is on Arnold Drive and borders the SDC, is not open to the public but we can be found at the Springs' Community Farmers Market. (Note: the Kenwood Community Farmers Market is not renewing this year.) Be healthy and mindful! Buy local!

The buzz from around the bend

Sheryee McCormick of McCormick's Mercantile reports, “We heard the call of the valley and are now stocking yarns in the shop. We will also be adding classes and knit-alongs in the future as well as expanding our yarn shop inventory, so stay tuned!”

From BJ Blanchard: “The Projects Committee of the [Glen Ellen] Forum has received a $9,500 grant from Sonoma County Tourism Impact Funds to use on a downtown Glen Ellen project. The Glen Ellen Post Office Parking Lot Beautification Plan will include a mulch surround around the parking area, irrigated plantings, a new rubbish receptacle, a small lending library, and a three-sided kiosk under the oak tree by the bridge. The kiosk is intended to be a site for locals and visitors to use and will include a lovely town map indicating sites of interest.”

Jack London State Park has a “Yoga at the Redwood” scheduled for Saturday, May 11, 10 a.m.-1 p.m., a “Gershwin and His Times” Mother's Day concert slated for Sunday, May 12, 3-5 p.m., and the ever-popular, family-friendly “Plowing Play Day” on May 19, 10 a.m.-3 p.m. It's a beautiful time of year to explore all of the amazing open spaces on our end of the valley - Sugarloaf State Park, Jack London State Park, and the Sonoma Valley Regional Park. If you send in your wildflower, wildlife, and vista photos, we can put them on the KP Facebook page.

The next Glen Ellen Forum town hall meeting will be on Monday, May 6, at 7 p.m. at Dunbar School's multi-purpose room (note the location change). Do you need a ride from town to Dunbar? A van shuttle service will be available, leaving from the Garden Court parking lot at 6:40 p.m. Information about the forum in general can be found at Other forms of communication include email ( or the group's Facebook page (Glen Ellen Forum).

The next monthly planning meeting for Glen Ellen Village Fair 2019 is scheduled for Monday, May 13, 6:30 p.m. in the saloon pool room of the Jack London Lodge. All are welcome and encouraged to attend. If you have questions about the fair, or would like to be involved, email
