Ignite, write and express your creativity

Poet and writer Brian R. Martens will teach a summer class exploring creativity through poetry, nature, and perception, on Saturdays, 10 a.m.-2:30 p.m., at the Sebastopol Center for the Arts, starting Aug. 3. Learn how to tap into your creative genius and nurture your own special gifts. Fostering your creativity in community will allow you to commit and sustain a new way of creating. Each season will have a different focus. Bring writing materials, a journal and notebook. Cost per session is $65 for members, $70 for non-members, plus $10 materials fee.

Crossing Borders

The Santa Rosa Arts Center presents Crossing Borders, Art on Immigration and Dissolving Boundaries, featuring works in many media by Bay Area and Sonoma County artists, running Aug.1-Sept. 27, with an opening reception on Aug. 2, 5-8 p.m. This exhibit couldn't be more timely, encompassing politics, racism, love, psychology, societal transformation and the future of the nation.

Cool coastal hiking

Escape the Sonoma Valley heat on Aug. 10, when Bill & Dave Hikes go to the Sonoma Coast to enjoy some “cool” hiking at Shell Beach. Plan to arrive by 9:45 a.m. at the parking lot about three miles south of River Road (CA116) for a prompt 10 a.m. departure. This 7.5-mile, moderate hike has an elevation gain of 1,700 feet and will last approximately four hours. Bring a lunch and liquids, and dress appropriately for the weather.


We bring the paint…you bring the paws

Join “Paws for Love” for a day of dogs, art, wine, adoptions and fun at Kokomo Winery in Dry Creek Valley, Aug. 10, 11 a.m.-4 p.m. Kokomo wines, grilled hotdogs and sausages will be available for purchase, and for a $25 donation, Ellyn will be on hand to assist your best friend in creating an original canine masterpiece especially for you. Admission is free and well-behaved dogs on leashes are welcome. Sonoma County Animal Services, Green Dog Rescue, and Rohnert Park Animal Services will be on site with dogs for adoption.

Free movies at the Green

Pack a picnic and head to Green Music Center's Weill Lawn on Aug. 10 for a double feature of The Little Mermaid: 30th Anniversary Screening and this year's new Aladdin. For 30 years children of all ages have fallen in love with Ariel, Flounder, Sebastian, and others. Bring your dinglehopper! Just out of theaters, the live-action feature of Aladdin brings to life your favorite animated characters and takes viewers on a magical adventure. Admission is free; parking is $5. Films begin at 5 p.m.

African rhythm

The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art's annual Art Night on Aug. 10, 6-9 p.m., takes its inspiration from African rhythms and wildlife. Enjoy an African Dawa cocktail from 3 Badge Beverage Corp, make beaded jewelry and shaker instruments at maker stations, and listen to the music of Onye and the Messengers, a Northern California-based Afro World Beat Band. The band finds its roots in the spirit of ancient Africa, re-creating the tribal world village celebration of body and soul. Tickets are $25 for members, $35 for general public. The Blues Is Alive and Well

Multi-Grammy winner and one of the most celebrated blues guitarists of his generation, Buddy Guy, comes to the SOMO Village in Rohnert Park on Aug. 10, for a live performance along with local blues legend Charlie Musselwhite and blues guitarist Jimmie Vaughn. The title of Guy's latest album says it all: The Blues Is Alive and Well. Come hear it for yourself. Tickets are $50-$100. Children 5 years and younger free when accompanied by a paid adult 18 years or older.

Storytelling revealed

The Sonoma Valley Museum of Art hosts a field photography workshop on Aug. 11 and 18, 1-3 p.m. Led by Ron Zak, this is a workshop for the visually enthusiastic with a thirst to dig deeper. Zak has been leading photography tours worldwide since 1989. Students will be led through the process of making creative, visual choices that tell a compelling story while venturing into our local community with their smart phones, learning to compose photos that reflect personal narratives connecting with community, environment, and other interests. Total cost for both dates is $60 members / $70 non-members.

Summer evening adventure

Take a twilight nature hike along the Montini Trail in Sonoma on Aug. 11, 7-8 p.m. This will be a one-mile, slow-paced hike with minor elevation change. Sturdy shoes and water recommended. All ages, free of charge. No reservation needed. Meet at General Vallejo's Home parking lot.

Passionate flamenco

The passion and fire of Spain hit the stage in Santa Rosa with Sol Flamenco, an evening of lightning-fast footwork, haunting guitar rhythms, and soulful singing set in the intimate Arlene Francis Center in Santa Rosa. The Aug. 16 show features a cast of artists who have lived and trained in Spain, the birthplace of flamenco, with special guest singer, Azriel “El Moreno.” Tapas (and wine) start at 6:30 p.m., show at 7:30 p.m. Advance tickets, $20.
