In a commercial kitchen in the back of Skyhawk Village shopping center, Chef Ed Metcalfe, his son Maiko, and Chef Keo Xayavong, are busy putting together numerous sushi platters for pick-up and delivery to Sonoma Valley.

Dining alone? How about the Flying Solo platter, with California roll, spicy tuna roll, futo maki roll and miso soup?

Do you have more mouths to feed? Then maybe you need the Sashimi Twenty-Four Platter - four pieces each of Hamachi, salmon, Albacore, scallops, and saba.

There are more kinds of sushi platters (vegetarian platters too!) you can order as well, all made with 100 percent real ingredients.

Sushimotos Catering & Chef Services is building up a following on social media for pick-up and delivery, and is currently offering the opportunity to order platters Tuesday and Thursday evenings by 7 p.m. for pick up the following day, Wednesday and Fridays, between 4:30 and 5:30 p.m. at 5755 Mountainhawk Way in Santa Rosa.

COVID-19 brought a temporary halt to Sushimotos' busy catering business, and their sushi classes offered throughout Sonoma County, so Metcalfe, who used to own Shiso Modern Asian Kitchen in Sonoma, and his crew decided to make sushi platters. Also involved in the enterprise is director of Operations Sierra Nadeau, who handles all the orders, packaging, and marketing.

All they needed was a commercial kitchen to ramp up the business. They found one in Skyhawk Village, which they share with other food purveyors, including BBQ, dim sum, and a cookie business.

Big plans are on tap, including the addition of hot Asian food meals in mid-July.

They are also starting delivery service to Oakmont and Kenwood.

Transcendence partners with girl & the fig

Transcendence Theatre Company has partnered with longtime Transcendence supporter Sondra Bernstein and her girl & the fig to prepare dinner boxes fans can purchase while watching online performances of past season's shows.

All of this is because of the coronavirus pandemic that prevents gathering in crowds or for large groups to perform on stage with an audience. These annual shows usually take place at Jack London Historic State Park

Many Transcendence attendees have indulged in the Fig Rig foods at the group's Jack London State Historic Park performances, and Bernstein has bought out an evening each year to treat all of her employees to dinner and a show.

The shows for which you can order dinner boxes include "Don't Stop Believin" (July 10 to 12 and 17 to 19; "Fantastical Family Night" July 24 to 25; "I Hope You Dance," Aug. 14 to 16 and 21 to 23; and Transcendence's "Gala Celebration" (Sept. 11 to 13). Order at least four days in advance of the show you are "attending."

Local author pens colorful memoir

Longtime Valley of the Moon resident Nancy Martin was scheduled to promote her memoir, From the Summer of Love to the Valley of the Moon, at the six Copperfield's Book Stores in the Bay Area, when COVID-19 shut everything down.
