Take solace in art

Karen Miller

Local artist Karen A. Miller presents "Composed for Solace" at the Upstairs Art Gallery in Healdsburg. The collection highlights pastel paintings created during the current pandemic and centers on subject matter from (necessarily) close to home. The Small Works Showcase on the stairway features "Reflections of Myself" by Ron Sumner, a collection of watercolor paintings that show the artist's deep appreciation for nature, especially wildlife. The exhibit runs now through Sept. 27. Hours: Saturday and Sunday, 11 a.m.-6 p.m. and Monday-Friday, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

SR City Council candidate forum

The League of Women Voters of Sonoma County, AAUW of Santa Rosa, and Northern California Public Media will co-sponsor a virtual Candidate Forum for the City of Santa Rosa's District 1 on Sept. 16, 6:30-8 p.m. There are four candidates running for District 1: Duane De Witt, Elizabeth Valente, Jorge Inocencio, and Eddie Alvarez. Learn about English genealogy

The Sonoma County Genealogical Society's virtual Sept. 19 meeting, noon-2:30 p.m., features Vernon Smith discussing "English Genealogy." Smith's talk will coverhow to search records for your English ancestors from mid-1837. He will talk about the major and some minor research tools to connect with those who came from across the pond. Conservation leaders share experiences

Alba K. Estrada López The Laguna Foundation hosts a virtual panel discussion, "Early Career Conservationists of Sonoma County," on Sept. 22, 12-1:15 p.m. Join Alba K.Estrada López (Conservation Educator at Point Blue), Elias Lopez (Bilingual Stewardship Specialist at LandPaths, Co-Founder of Crecer ConCiencia), Luis Morales (Reserve Steward at Bodega Marine Reserve), Josh Nuzzo (STRAW Project Manager at Point Blue), and Asa Voight (Restoration Field Supervisor at LagunaFoundation), all early-career conservation leaders working in land management, stewardship, and education who have a wealth of experience and perspective to share. Roadmap to recovery webinar

Fires and floods - Sonoma County has been through a number of disasters, and people have many questions about filing insurance claims. United Policyholders will hold a free webinar on Sept. 23, 6 p.m. Staff member Sandy Watts will providean overview of frequently asked insurance claim questions. Participants will also be able to ask individual questions during the webinar. Watts has over 25 years of insurance claim and coverage expertise and is dedicated to helping people solve difficult insurance and loss recovery problems. Copperfield's features acclaimed author

Deborah Tannen

On Sept. 24 at 7 p.m. (virtually) Copperfield's Books presents Deborah Tannen discussing her poignant memoir, Finding My Father, about the life of her father, Eli Tannen. Piecing together the puzzle of her father's life, beginning with his astonishingly vivid memories of the Hasidic community in Warsaw where he was born in 1908, she traces his journey - arriving in New York City in 1920, quitting high school at 14, and a vast array of jobs, including prison guard, gun-toting alcohol tax inspector, and eventually establishing the largest workers' compensation law practice in New York and running for Congress.


Luster & Decals workshop

Kala Stein

The Sonoma Community Center hosts an online workshop Sept. 26, 10 a.m.-noon, with Kala Stein. Stein will demonstrate how to use overglaze metallic lusters and overglaze decals to get brilliant and precise surface designs on top of fired glazes. Both techniques are applied over a glazed surface and fired again at a lower temperature, called down-firing. Stein will also touch on underglaze decals.When working with metallic lusters, proper ventilation and precautions must be taken. Kala will explain and show how to work with lusters so that you and your studio-mates remain safe. Cost is $45. Pre-registration required. All levels welcome.

Cloverdale Sculpture Trail

Ten new sculptures have been installed along the Cloverdale Sculpture Trail in downtown Cloverdale after a three-month delay due to COVID-19. Residents and tourists alike applaud the fact that Cloverdale has brought a feeling of normalcy to the community. Each year for 17 years, new, sophisticated sculptural diversity has appeared in downtown Cloverdale. Cloverdale Boulevard between Citrus Fair Drive and 3rd Street is lined with an array of playful and provocative sculptures unmatched in Sonoma County.
